A Timeline for an Estate or Downsizing Sale
There are many estate sale companies in the Durham and Chapel Hill area, and you should interview several to find the best fit. An initial consultation with the family representative at the proposed sale location is standard and should be offered free of charge. Before this free consult, you should consider:
- What belongings you or other family members want to keep
- Your desired time frame
- What you hope the sale will accomplish.
One tip: don’t throw anything away until you have talked with your chosen estate sales company. You’ll be surprised at what people are willing to buy and find collectible and useful.
If you choose to go with Peace Street, here is a basic timeline for what to expect after we mutually agree on a sale date and sign a contract.
1. PREPARE FOR THE SALE (GENERALLY ONE OR TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE SALE DATE)
I will clean, sort, identify, arrange and price the contents of the sale. I will carefully research any items I cannot immediately identify or value. If I come across family papers or belongings, or other items that do not seem like they should be part of the sale I will set them aside to review with you.
I will photograph and inventory the entire contents of the sale. These photographs will be also used in advertising and marketing.
I will market and advertise the sale both in print and online, using email, social media and my own network of contacts.
I will notify any neighbors of the sale and ensure that traffic and parking are handled with minimal disruption.
2. CONDUCT THE SALE
My staff and I will be focused on every detail, from signage to security, to make this a successful and worthwhile sale. Furthermore, my team is friendly, helpful, and efficient, which increases the number and value of items sold.
3. WRAP UP THE SALE
I will make sure any unsold items are donated responsibly and have the rest removed. The house will be cleaned, locked up, and ready for the next step.
Within a week I will provide you with an inventory and accounting, charitable donation slips and payment for the proceeds.
4. THANK YOU! I IMAGINE IT WILL BE A GREAT PLEASURE TO WORK WITH YOU.
My goal is relieving you of as much stress as possible while conducting a successful sale.
